Expenses

Naturally, a venture of this nature does not come cheaply.  Crew members can elect to do the complete circumnavigation at a cost of £30,000 or as many individual legs as they can afford.  Individual legs vary in cost.  For example, Brazil to South Africa will cost £3,400 and the final Caribbean - USA east coast - Liverpool leg will be priced at £4,160.  Medical insurance will add up to £1,500 and the cost of the 19 days of crew training is £2,950, although this is ultimately deducted from the cost of the full circumnavigation.

And it doesn’t stop there.  Although a lot of the serious sailing clothing is provided free of charge by race clothing sponsors Henri Lloyd, there is still additional kit that has to be purchased: sailing boots, deck shoes, base- and mid-layers, gloves, sunglasses, kit bag and waterproof sleeping bag etc, not to mention all the personal items that are needed.  All of this kit I estimate to cost between £900 and £1,000.  To all of this, add spending money whilst in port and, should one only be participating in individual legs, there will be the cost of airfares to join your yacht at a foreign port and then return to UK at the end of those legs.

As well as achieving my aim of sailing around the world, it is my intention that others should benefit from my experience.  To this end, I aim to raise an additional minimum of 10% of my sailing fees in order to benefit the Ellen MacArthur Trust.  Thus, if I were to complete only the Brazil to South Africa leg, the Trust would benefit by £340 whereas, if I achieve the full circumnavigation, I hope to have at least £3,000 to donate to Ellen MacArthur.

As a means to raising the necessary funds, I have numerous events planned.  These include hog roasts, raffles, scratch cards, auctions, car washes, supermarket bagging, cake stalls, car boot sales and advertising space on polo shirts.  Additional sponsorship will be essential, however, and to this end I am applying to many well-known companies for funding in the hope of a leading corporate sponsor. In return for their financial support, I am offering to promote corporate sponsors in any way that I can by placing logos on clothing, letterheads and on this website.  In addition, I am offering to provide regular written reports on my progress for inclusion in company publications and to represent the sponsors in any other ways that they may request.  Publicity for my endeavour is important when attempting to raise sponsorship and I have already received an encouraging response from both my local paper and radio station, with further publicity-seeking ideas in the pipeline.
